Connectedness

25 Monday Jan 2016

Nothing shapes my sense of life and living so much as love in all its various forms.

Funny, how we use the same word to link us with our parents and grandparents, that we use to link us with our children and grandchildren. We use this word for the romantic connections and the platonic.

What does it really mean when I say “I love you?” I barely scratch the surface, when I say it means that you bring meaning to my life, it means that I define myself in part by our relationship with each other, it means you ground me and you help me soar high, and I hope I do the same to you.

To my greatest loves, my husband of nearly thirty years, and my daughters, you make my life rich beyond words. To my parents, my sisters, and all my family and friends, thank you for enriching my life.

Happy Valentine’s Day,

forblog

Elizabeth’s Lost Scarf, How Everything Changed

13 Wednesday Jan 2016

Elizabeth

Our artisan, Elizabeth Gillett started off at Hartwick college where she studied painting and printmaking. She designed her first scarf, after losing her favorite – when she couldn’t find a replacement she decided to make one! It was only months later that the same velvet scarf was being sold in Barney’s New York and the Whitney Museum Gift Shop. Twenty years later, her range has expanded from scarves to wraps, and cover-ups.

Anyone familiar with  Elizabeth’s designs, shouldn’t be too surprised by this- as she handcrafts each scarf from in-the-moment inspirations. This artisan extracts inspiration from everything around her, from watching a Dutch sunset to playing in a garden with her daughter.

Elizabeth’s mastery lies in her ability to bring her inspirations to life using materials like chiffons, velvets and Chantily laces. Through painstaking techniques, such as crochet, macrame, tatting, needle lace, beadwork and smocking are used to create delicate, intricate design- making each accessory a masterpiece.

Elizabeth’s designs are updated seasonally, she works with unique materials and incorporates key trends to keep her designs fresh! Elizabeth creates each design in her Garment District loft in Manhattan which functions as a design house, workroom and showroom. Elizabeth lives with her husband Tom and daughter, Gemma in Tribeca.

Artisans in Boleslawiec, Poland, have been creating beautiful and functional folk art for centuries. The unique clay and glaze are high fired to create stoneware pieces of enormous durability, and the exquisite hand-painted designs make them as beautiful as they are functional.

Each year, Terri visits the town of Boleswiec Poland, where skilled artisans continue the Polish pottery tradition. Terri works with our team of talented artisans to come up with the designs for each piece, making this stunning stoneware exclusive to Uno Alla Volta. The motifs designed on each piece change with the seasons every year!

Two groups of artisans work side-by-side, those who form the shapes of native clay, and those who adorn them by painting each piece with motifs with carved sponges. The unique properties of the clay and the high temperatures at which it is fired create serve ware that is safe for the dishwasher, freezer, oven and microwave. The glaze provides it with natural non-stick properties.

Complete any table setting with our exclusive Polish pottery, guaranteed to add a captivating touch to any home.
