Product Spotlight: Paperweights from Washington

29 Thursday Jun 2017

Posted by artisanmoments in Uno Alla Volta

≈ Comments Off on Product Spotlight: Paperweights from Washington

Astrology holds that each sign of the zodiac is aligned with a planet or star that influences the personality of each person born under that sign. Our Washington State glass artisans masterfully handcraft these paperweights, representing the astrological signs’ ruling counterpart.

To create their celestial paperweights, our master glass artisans form the images by rolling the heated glass in colored glass powders, shaping with hand tools and adding gold leaf and dichroic glass pieces to the surface for an iridescent effect, using molten glass heated to over 2000° F. After the features are formed, they are then surrounded by clear and matte molten glass, shaped into a rounded form and polished to a smooth finish. Ash from the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens serves as the secret ingredient.

Just in time for summer, these masters of glass blowing have handcrafted an elaborate collection of ocean-themed paperweights depicting jellyfish and a coral reef.

Dive into the deep blue sea with these purple and blue hues for your home and your wardrobe.

Hand-Blown Glass Starfish

Using traditional glassmaking techniques and his own signature details, our Massachusetts artisan handcrafts this sweet starfish. Once the design is complete, he uses only a blowpipe and hand tools to meticulously shape colorful molten glass into each starfish, which seems to radiate with beauty in the light.

Mark’s Hand-Blown “Northern Lights” Vase

Mark, our New Orleans glassblower, likens his craft to a dance, as he masterfully handcrafts each “Northern Lights” vase. Forty years’ experience has taught him to anticipate the glass’ response to slight changes of movement or additions of color. Using only a blowpipe and hand tools, he masterfully shapes layers of richly-colored glass, then uses a cold-fusion technique to create each

Garden Gala

23 Friday Jun 2017

Posted by artisanmoments in Uno Alla Volta

≈ Comments Off on Garden Gala

June is the month of roses. Whether it is a traditional red rose, a pink rose, or yellow rose, each color holds a certain sentiment.

  • Red rose: “I love you,” beauty, respect, congratulations
  • Pink rose: appreciation, happiness, sympathy
  • Yellow rose: joy, gladness, friendship
  • Orange rose: enthusiasm, passion
  • Lavender rose: love at first sight
  • Blue rose: achieving the impossible

What better way to celebrate this month’s official flower than with roses that will last forever?

Everlasting Red Murano Glass Rose

For nearly 30 years, Francesco and Roberta have been masterfully handcrafting delightful glass sculptures on Venice’s famed isle of Murano, such as these everlasting red roses. To create each “forever flower,” this husband and wife team lampworks each petal, one at a time, then adds a silk stem adorned with glass leaves.

Capodimonte Porcelain Pink Rose With Bud

Capodimonte porcelain is the finest of Italian artistic pottery, with a history beginning in Naples in 1738. In that year, with clays of pure white color and the finest grain brought in from Calabria, artists created highly detailed objects rivaling the best of other European courts. Almost 300 years later, each piece is still meticulously handcrafted, uno alla volta, with detail that brings each flower to life.

Eternal Rose Wreath

This vibrant rose wreath is hand-assembled on a natural twig base in Baja California, Mexico. Each is composed of eucalyptus, green caspia, green and lavender sudan grass, pink and mauve larkspur, fuchsia, red and yellow sinuata, silk green and pink hydrangea, and burgundy, light and dark pink and purple silk roses.

Hand-Gilded Rose Champagne Glass

In a third-generation workshop in Verona, Italy, Amedeo and his two sons, Valentino and Roberto transform ordinary glass into works of art with this rose champagne glass. Each design begins as a sketch placed within the glass to be used as a guide. They draw the design freehand on the surface of the glass with stucco, and then carefully apply a layer of silver before adding the translucent color.

Celebrating Father’s Day – Virginia

15 Thursday Jun 2017

≈ Comments Off on Celebrating Father’s Day – Virginia

My 90+ year-old father is a quiet man, most often found behind a book, who tended to teach more through actions than words.  One of the greatest lessons he imparted was his love and respect of animals. My father taught me that it’s not just about the human connection; a connection between humans and animals can be just as strong….and at times we may even prefer our animal friends to our human ones!

Amedeo’s Ocean Glasses

14 Wednesday Jun 2017

Posted by artisanmoments in Uno Alla Volta

≈ Comments Off on Amedeo’s Ocean Glasses

After graduating from art school, our artisan Amedeo founded his glass workshop in Verona, Italy. From the time his sons Valentino and Roberto were old enough to hold a paintbrush, they have worked alongside their father, becoming expert craftsmen and artisans in their own rights. Today, the three transform ordinary glass into luminous works of art, one at a time.

Each silver-leafed sealife wine glass of Verona is masterfully handcrafted in a third-generation workshop where he and his sons transform ordinary glass into works of art. After applying a stucco design to the wine glass, a layer of color and silver leaf is added by hand to create each piece. Once completely dry, they are hand-polished to a gleaming luster reminiscent of the sea.

Celebrating Father’s Day – Anna

13 Tuesday Jun 2017

Posted by artisanmoments in Father's Day 2017, Uno Alla Volta

≈ Comments Off on Celebrating Father’s Day – Anna

At seventeen years old, I made the announcement that all hardworking, suburban parents dread hearing: I was going to move to New York to go to art school. While this may have seemed like a flighty pipe dream at face value, I was too young and starry-eyed to choose a sturdier, straighter path for myself. I was told throughout the years by everyone from strangers to family members that there was no money in the arts, and especially no money in my passion of memoir writing.

As it turned out, my college experience was the most enchanted period of my life. While my friends were stuck in classes like “Accounting 101” and “Nineteenth Century British Literature” at other schools, I was soaking up courses like “Riot Grrrls And Radical Women” and “The Art Of The Novella.” In such a small school, I had professors who took the time to know and mentor me personally, no doubt ensuring I would grow to be the writer I am today.

Although post-graduate life was an unsure and turbulent time filled with temp jobs and retail work, I finally found a career in writing at Uno two years after graduation. In this job, I have been given opportunities to travel the country and the world, writing about my experiences, the kindhearted artisans I’ve met, and all of our products, many of which I have watched come to life through every step of their creation. Through many missteps and happy accidents, I found a career doing what I love in a steady job.

This Father’s Day, I want to thank my dad for supporting all my dreams mentally, emotionally, and financially. It was the greatest kindness I have ever been extended.

Celebrating Father’s Day – Carrie

10 Saturday Jun 2017

Posted by artisanmoments in Father's Day 2017, Uno Alla Volta

≈ Comments Off on Celebrating Father’s Day – Carrie

As the youngest of four children, I have always been daddy’s little girl – so much so that my siblings (and even my mom) nicknamed me “the secret weapon.” They were convinced that whenever they wanted something, all they had to do was get me to ask my dad and he would instantly say yes. From bringing home candy to buying us pug puppies, that actually proved to be the truth!

I have always looked up to my father for his unparalleled intelligence, witty humor, verbose vocabulary, and his sage advice. Growing up, I was so inspired by my father’s love of all things French. One day I decided that I wanted him to teach me French too, and from that day forward his unwavering support led to frequent trips to Quebec, moving to France, and many, many croissants. I bet he never could have imagined as a high schooler in his French class that one day he would have a daughter who would live in Paris!

I am so lucky to have two incredibly loving and supportive parents who will always encourage me to follow my heart, wherever that leads me (even if that’s back to Paris, sorry Mom!)

Papa, je t’aime, merci pour tout que tu fais pour moi toujours.

Bisous,

–Carrie, Marketing & Public Relations Assistant

I was lucky enough to have my dad come to every single Girl Scout Father-Daughter Dance growing up…and a mom to scrapbook every memory!

Fast forward 10 years to when my parents came to visit me in Paris – here, we are at the famous Bastille!

An Uno Alla Volta Inside Look: Best Friends Day

08 Thursday Jun 2017

Posted by artisanmoments in Uno Alla Volta

≈ Comments Off on An Uno Alla Volta Inside Look: Best Friends Day

MM1Being an employee at Uno Alla Volta is more than just a standard 9 to 5 desk job.  Our una grande famiglia spans across the entire company,  including our artisans, our customers, and our employees. Our product developers, Minetta and Marina, are the perfect example of co-workers turned family.

Back in 2011, Marina came on board to Uno Alla Volta as an intern for our product development team. “After talking to Marina and watching her work, I took her under my wing,” Minetta says, smiling while reminiscing on how they met. While teaching Marina the ropes, the two prospered, producing not only a strong co-working  dynamic, but two very best friends.

Today, Marina is our primary home and accessories product developer, while Minetta hones in oMM2n jewelry, resulting in a team that puts a fun twist on executing everyday tasks. The two combine their unique senses of style in order to bring variety to our customers. A great example of this is our Sparkling Teal Bucket Bag, which was designed with influences from Minetta’s bright, bold, shimmering style. When the two partner to develop jewelry pieces inspired by Marina’s sense of style, it’s almost the complete opposite, as they incorporate her signature neutral and earthy tones. Despite their differences in style, the two always keep communication fluid, resulting in great teamwork.

MM3With such a strong mutual understanding of each other, Minetta and Marina have traveled together on several product development trips from Italy to Las Vegas, meeting a variety of artisans and building close relationships with them while strengthening their own friendship. Together, they work efficiently and diligently, with laughter and smiles on their faces, to ensure our fashionable products appeal to a variety of tastes.

How many companies can say that they have two co-workers who not only like each other, but love each other like best friends? Uno Alla Volta sure can!

Uno Alla Volta wishes you a happy Best Friend’s Day. May it be well spent with your closest friends!

Celebrating Father’s Day – Lorraine

07 Wednesday Jun 2017

≈ Comments Off on Celebrating Father’s Day – Lorraine

Growing up as a little girl, there was never anyone bigger or stronger than my dad. I remember feeling so small in his presence, I always felt such a strong sense of protection from him, like nothing could ever hurt me as long as he was there, surely I loved being ‘daddy’s little girl’.

As I grew older, he supported me in different ways. He always encouraged me to try new things, instilled a strong work ethic through his own example, encouraged me to be independent, always told me I could achieve anything I set my mind to, and even as a young child, he never shielded me from the (sometimes cold) realities of the real world, something to this day I am so very grateful for.

It was his loving but realistic approach to being a father that so prepared me for the times he wasn’t there, like when I moved to NYC for college at the age of 18 (being in my 30’s, I now understand his concern), or traveled internationally for my first study abroad experience, I always carried with me the life lessons he had shared with me all of those years ago.

As much as I have always loved, cared for and appreciated my father, it is amazing how much this continues to grow with my age. I have had the luxury of seeing him be a grandfather to my nephew and two nieces, and it makes me so excited to know there are still so many things we will share. His example has allowed me to know the type of man I want in a husband and father to my future children, and I couldn’t be more grateful to be his daughter.

Wishing my dad Raymond, and all of the wonderful father’s out there a very Happy Father’s Day!
